What is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi (large and medium-sized airways) in the lungs. Inflammation of the mucous membrane in the bronchial tubes. It typically causes bronchospasm and coughing. People who have bronchitis often cough up thickened mucus, which can be discolored. Bronchitis may be either acute or chronic.
Types of Bronchitis:
- Acute Bronchitis: This is the more common one. Symptoms last for a few weeks, but it doesn’t usually cause any problems past that. It’s more like a cold and cough.
- Chronic Bronchitis: This one is more serious, in that it keeps coming back or doesn’t go away at all. The duration of this is longer than any cold or flu. Coughing is persistent.
- Production of mucus (sputum), which can be clear, white, yellowish-gray or green in color — rarely, it may be streaked with blood
- Shortness of breath
- Slight fever and chills
- Chest discomfort
